What MSE does

Design cards and full sets

MSE was designed for Magic: The Gathering and also ships with templates for other games, including Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, and Vs. System. You design cards inside a managed set, not as loose image files.

Set statistics built in

A statistics window shows information such as average mana cost and rarity counts for your set, and MSE can generate randomized booster packs and Sealed pools from it.

Your own set symbol

A built-in vector symbol editor lets you draw an expansion symbol for your set instead of borrowing one.

Export and print

Cards render to image files in png, jpg, bmp, and tiff formats, individually or as a whole set, ready for printing or publishing a spoiler online. Image resolution depends on the template you install.

Free, open, and offline

MSE is GPL-2.0 open-source software with public source code. It is a desktop program: your sets and card data stay on your own machine and no account or internet connection is needed to design cards.

Play exports

Beyond images, MSE can export sets to HTML and to online play tools such as LackeyCCG and Apprentice, so a finished set can actually be played.

The three MSE versions, honestly explained

You will see three version numbers around MSE, and they come from three different places:

  • 2.0.0 (2011, SourceForge) — the classic release: an installer that bundles program and templates together.
  • 2.1.2 (2020, GitHub) — the latest release by the original author, Twan van Laarhoven. A small portable ZIP with the program only; templates and fonts are installed separately. The author’s upstream development has stopped here.
  • 2.5.8 (community distribution) — ready-made packages handed out by the fan community that maintains MSE today, in Standard, Lite, Advanced, and Non-Magic variants with templates included.

The program itself is no longer being updated by its author, but the template ecosystem is alive: the community template-pack repositories on GitHub were still receiving updates in October 2026. That combination — a stable program plus actively maintained templates — is the current state of MSE. The download page links each line from its own distribution channel and lists the checksums we have verified ourselves.
